Recent media reports have seen former TV star and instant political hopeful Xolani Khumalo attempting to cast doubt over the R1.8 billion chemical toilet tender in Ekurhuleni. These claims, however, are misleading and show a clear lack of understanding of municipal governance and administrative systems.
The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed that the previous three-year chemical toilet contract ended naturally and was not terminated due to non-payment. A new supplier has been appointed through the proper Supply Chain Management (SCM) procedures, ensuring continuity of services for residents. Any service gaps that have occurred relate to old units from the expired contract, not mismanagement or corruption.
Importantly, the awarding of new suppliers was subjected to a Probit audit, a new and innovative mechanism introduced by the city administration to review the SCM selection process before any final award is made.
All allegations raised by media outlets, including News24, are being addressed through the due administrative process by the body responsible for professional auditors — an independent professional authority that will advise accordingly.
The Ekurhuleni leadership has demonstrated consistent diligence in ensuring that municipal processes are transparent, accountable, and focused on service delivery. Rather than the baseless claims made by Khumalo, the city has taken proactive steps to resolve any outstanding issues and ensure residents’ needs are met.
It is important to note that Xolani Khumalo, despite his TV fame, lacks the technical knowledge of municipal finance, administration, and governance. His public statements about this tender are uninformed and risk misleading the public. Political commentary without proper understanding of processes only undermines constructive governance.
This episode highlights the need for political parties like ActionSA to better educate their members on municipal systems, the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), and governance processes. Misguided claims do nothing for communities and instead spread unnecessary confusion.
Ekurhuleni leadership remains committed to transparent governance and effective service delivery. The city’s systems and procedures, including innovative auditing practices, ensure public resources are managed responsibly. Unfounded claims by ill-informed instant political hopefuls like Xolani Khumalo should be dismissed as political posturing rather than factual critique.
