The Organisation for Human Rights RSA notes with concern the suspension of Mr Lesiba Arnold Malotana, Head of the Gauteng Department of Health and Wellness.
It is important to highlight that, just last week, the names of business figures and departmental personnel involved in the Tembisa Hospital matter were publicly disclosed. Mr Malotana was not mentioned in that report and was not identified as having played any role in the events under review.
Given this context, his suspension raises questions about the motivations behind the action. There is a risk that Mr Malotana has been made a scapegoat for political purposes, rather than being held accountable based on factual evidence.
The Organisation for Human Rights RSA calls on the Gauteng Provincial Government to ensure that the process is transparent, fair, and free from political interference, distinguishing between administrative responsibility and decisions influenced by political actors. Public servants acting in good faith should not be penalised for circumstances beyond their control.
