A new Crowdsignal online survey has overwhelmingly cleared Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi of any wrongdoing in relation to the controversial AmaPanyaza community safety programme.
According to the poll, 66% of respondents said Lesufi acted in good faith to address Gauteng’s rising crime levels and that his focus was on community safety — not on circumventing the law. Only 31% believe he should be held accountable for the decision, while 1% remain unsure.
The results come amid ongoing political attacks, including a motion by the Democratic Alliance (DA) seeking to paint Lesufi’s initiative as unlawful and populist. However, the survey findings suggest the public is not buying into this narrative — instead viewing Lesufi’s leadership as decisive, responsive, and community-oriented.
Analysts say the poll exposes the deep hypocrisy and disinformation that have shaped some of the media and opposition criticism. While detractors continue to question the legality of the AmaPanyaza deployment, ordinary South Africans appear to value intent and impact over political gamesmanship.
Public sentiment captured by the survey highlights a clear message: people want action against crime, not endless politicking. Lesufi’s intervention, though controversial, is widely seen as a bold and necessary response to Gauteng’s persistent safety crisis.
In the midst of growing disinformation and orchestrated outrage, the data offers a reality check — reaffirming that the Premier retains strong public confidence and continues to enjoy grassroots support.
In essence, the survey exonerates Premier Lesufi, confirming that the majority of citizens understand his intentions and reject the smear campaigns aimed at derailing genuine progress.
